Strategist Playbook

How to read the thick deck from a PM or chief strategist seat.

LensCurrent ReadWhy It Matters
Cycle RegimeCooling ExpansionLabor demand is slowing and the deck should emphasize downside skew, breadth, and claims confirmation.
Recession Trigger Watch0.23 pptSahm Rule near or above 0.50 ppt is a high-priority recession-risk signal.
Payroll Breadth40.0%Below 50% would mean contraction is broader than expansion across tracked industries.
JOLTS Deterioration Breadth71.4%A high share of industries with openings falling YoY confirms labor-demand cooling.
Core Private Ex Defensive26KSeparates cyclical private job creation from government and education/health support.
Real Wage Pulse-0.4%Real wage gains support consumption unless job growth and hours weaken faster.

What Matters First

Sahm Rule, initial and continuing claims, payroll breadth, and temp help. These are the fastest ways to separate noise from a real labor turn.

Quality Of Jobs

Full-time share, part-time share, multiple jobholders, hours worked, and real wage growth decide whether payroll growth is economically strong or cosmetically strong.

Demand Versus Supply

Openings per unemployed, openings-to-hires, labor-force growth, and participation identify whether unemployment is rising from weak demand or supply normalization.

Policy And Markets

Fed funds, curve slope, wage pressure, and equity context translate the labor tape into rates, credit, equity, and dollar implications.

Heatmaps And Scatters

Cross-sectional diagnostics, regime maps, and institutional signal tables.

Signal Matrix

Momentum z-scores are colored so green means labor-market heat or resilience and red means cooling or stress.

Definitions

Embedded glossary and model notes for reading the deck.

TermDefinition
U-3The headline unemployment rate: unemployed persons as a share of the civilian labor force.
U-6Broad underemployment rate including unemployed workers, marginally attached workers, and part-time workers for economic reasons.
Sahm RuleThe 3-month average U-3 unemployment rate minus its trailing 12-month low. A reading near 0.50 percentage points is a classic recession warning threshold.
Initial ClaimsWeekly new filings for unemployment insurance. The deck emphasizes the 4-week average and percent above the 52-week low.
Continuing ClaimsWorkers continuing to receive unemployment benefits. This is a labor absorption and reemployment signal.
JOLTSJob Openings and Labor Turnover Survey: openings, hires, quits, layoffs, and separations.
Openings / UnemployedA tightness ratio comparing labor demand to available unemployed workers.
Payroll BreadthThe percent of tracked payroll industries with positive month-over-month or year-over-year employment growth.
JOLTS Falling BreadthThe percent of tracked JOLTS industries where job openings are falling year-over-year.
Temporary HelpTemporary help services payrolls. This is commonly treated as a leading labor indicator because temp headcount is easy to cut before permanent staff.
Core Private Ex DefensiveTotal payrolls excluding government and education/health services, used to isolate the cyclical private labor impulse.
Defensive Share of Job GainsGovernment plus education/health services as a share of 12-month payroll gains.
Labor Growth ImpulseA z-score composite of payroll momentum, temp help, hours, claims, openings per unemployed, Sahm pressure, and payroll breadth.
Labor Recession ProbabilityA transparent heuristic probability model using Sahm pressure, claims pressure, continuing claims, payroll momentum, temp help, hours, openings per unemployed, and JOLTS deterioration breadth.
Z-ScoreA rolling standard-deviation score versus the series' own history. Positive means above trend; negative means below trend.
3M Avg MoMThree-month average of monthly changes, used to smooth payroll and labor-force noise.
YoYYear-over-year percent change. Used for levels where the trend is more useful than monthly volatility.
Recession ShadingGray background shading marks NBER recession months from the FRED USREC series.

Labor Recession Probability Method

  1. Normalize each labor stress input around practical macro thresholds.
  2. Average the normalized inputs into a rolling 3-month labor stress score.
  3. Map the score through a logistic curve to produce a 0-100 probability.
  4. Use the probability as a labor-market risk gauge, not as a standalone recession call.

The model is intentionally transparent and labor-only. It should be read alongside growth, inflation, credit, and policy data.
